European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the European Union is not only for politicians and diplomats, but all Europeans benefit from it thanks to the enlargement of the Schengen area.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the opening of the border is good mainly for children who will take it as a matter-of-course, while their parents only could dream of it.
The abolition of border checks that will make it possible to cross the border practically anywhere was celebrated along the 2200 km long Czech state border on Thursday already.
A majority of Czech mayors as well as inhabitants share the opinion that the Schengen entry will make easier the exchange of the workforce and that it will promote tourism.
Austrians and Germans who live along the border, on the contrary, are afraid the removal of border checks will increase criminality.
