At least seven people, including a Sri Lankan minister, have been injured by a bomb next to their convoy near the capital, Colombo, the military says.
The blast in Ja-Ela town, 12 miles (19kms) north of Colombo, was aimed at the car of Nation Building Minister, DM Dassanayake, an army spokesman said.
The five received minor injuries and were taken to hospital, he said.
Fighting between troops and rebels, who want independence for minority Tamils, has worsened in recent months.
