His rival in the February elections, President Vaclav Klaus, is preferred by four percent of Czechs fewer, the poll showed. Svejnar is supported by the CSSD, the Greens, some senators from minor groupings, and some lawmakers for the Communists (KSCM) and the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL). Klaus was nominated by the Civic Democratic Party (ODS, senior member of the three-party coalition government) and some Christian Democrats. According to a poll carried out by STEM for the public broadcaster Czech Television in December, Klaus and Svejnar are both popular with 34 percent of Czechs. As recently as November, almost one half of Czechs said in a different poll they did know Svejnar at all.
