11.01.2008 - Number of asylum applicants in Czech Republic drops in 2007

Over a quarter of last year's asylum applications were submitted by people from Ukraine and Turkey.

In 2006, 3016 foreigners sought asylum in the Czech Republic.

Asylum was last year granted to 191 applicants, 32 of whom came from Belarus, 31 from Russia, 19 from Ukraine and 17 from Iraq.

In 2006, 268 foreigners were granted asylum in the Czech Republic.

previous years, came from Ukraine - 293, followed by 213 applicants from Turkey and 160 applicants from Mongolia.

While the number of Ukrainian asylum seekers in the Czech Republic is traditionally high, the number of Turkish applicants has risen three times since 2006.

Ukrainians have been dominating the asylum application statistics since 1990.

There have been more than 13,000 of them over the past 18 years.

They are followed by Russians (almost 10,000) and Romanians (6000).

Most of the asylum applicants are, however, unsuccessful. Last year, for instance, only 19 Ukrainians were granted asylum, and since 1990 only 135 Ukrainians have been successful.

In 2007, only 31 Russians were granted asylum, and since 1990, 367 Russians have been successful.

The most successful asylum applicants in the long run are people from Romania. Over the past 17 years, 474 Romanies have been granted asylum in the Czech Republic, mainly in the early 1990s.

Overall, 3276 foreigners have received asylum in the Czech Republic so far. A number of them have, however, been stripped of asylum for various reasons.

At present, authorities register over 2000 foreigners with valid asylum documents.

The number of asylum applicants is expected to drop rapidly now that the Czech Republic entered the Schengen area since it became surrounded by Schengen countries only.

The only points where foreigners from other than Schengen countries can enter the Czech Republic directly are international airports.

According to the Schengen rules, a foreigner who crosses the Schengen area border has to apply for asylum in the first state he or she gets into.

If any of the Schengen member countries denies entry or asylum to somebody, the other countries do the same automatically.

The Czech Republic joined the Schengen area on December 21, 2007, along with Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
