Svejnar, 55, nominated by four groups of senators, including the senior opposition Social Democrats (CSSD), is to run against incumbent President Vaclav Klaus, 66, nominated by the ODS, of which he is honorary chairman. The presidential election is to start at a joint session of both houses of parliament on February 8. Svejnar asked the ODS deputies for a meeting before Christmas.

Klaus, Brown discuss Czech EU presidency ... Tluchor said. It is however a question how many ODS deputies will attend the meeting, Tluchor said. "I cannot force anybody to attend the meeting with Svejnar, particularly in the situation where all 81 ODS MPs nominated another candidate for president," Tluchor said. Before meeting Svejnar, the ODS deputies will also meet their candidate Klaus. The meeting is planned for Thursday, January 17. Svejnar is also meet ODS senators today. Klaus is considered a favourite of the election with regard for the ODS strength in parliament and the fact that some lawmakers from other parties will also vote for him.
