The Czech Environment Inspection fined the importers several million crowns. The state attorney has brought charges against 15 lorry drivers who face up to five years in prison, if found guilty. Under the amendment, drivers will have the duty to provide information on what they are transporting and lorries carrying waste will have to be specially marked. The law will take effect on the day of promulgation in the Digest of Laws. The amendment also counts with the removal of devices containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), mainly transformers, by the end of 2010. The Czech Republic has been fighting in the long run against the import of waste from abroad where its disposal is much more expensive. The Environment Ministry has rejected several times applications for the approval of import of tens of tonnes of waste from Germany to be liquidated in incinerators in Prague and Liberec, north Bohemia. According to a new EU director, waste transport across Europe is only possible if it is liquidated in an electricity-generating incinerator. The directive allows an EU member state to restrict or ban waste import if it is at variance with its waste management plan. ($1=17.395 crowns)
