Klaus, Brown discuss Czech EU presidency ... Democrats (CSSD). Svejnar's narrow lead has also been revealed by another three recent polls. The presidential elections, set for February 8, will be conducted in the bicameral Czech parliament in a secret ballot. Klaus was proposed by the Civic Democratic Party (ODS, senior governing coalition member) and Svejnar by several groupings including the opposition Social Democrats. As the ODS has a certain, though not sufficient majority in both houses, Klaus is considered the favourite of the election. The pollsters said it had been obvious since the beginning of the year that Svejnar was gaining ground. "At present, the situation is more or less stable, the balance of power has been steady.
Repeated polls have confirmed Svejnar's narrow lead before Klaus," they added. The view that Svejnar is a worthy rival of Klaus is held by 72 percent of Czechs. Svejnar is preferred by the following of the CSSD, the Communists (KSCM), the Greens and the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), whereas Klaus by that of the ODS. Over 60 percent of Czechs want the presidential elections in the parliament to be held publicly. This was proposed by the Social Democrats, but the plan is not likely to make it through the parliament.
