Svejnar may be CSSD candidate for Czech president ... council's powers in the selection of a new education minister after the resignation of Dana Kuchtova (SZ). The Greens national council is to meet presidential candidate Jan Svejnar later in the afternoon. The Greens, who proposed that liberal economist Svejnar run in the presidential election, will probably want to know his view on the U.S.
plans to build a radar base on Czech soil within the missile shield. The Greens have taken a neutral stand on the project in the government, and they condition their agreement with the radar base becoming part of the NATO structures. The party broader leadership, however, includes radical opponents of the plans. The Greens might be also interested in Svejnar's stance on nuclear power which they reject. Svejnar pointed out previously that apart from the reduction of energy consumption and new alternative resources, research should focus on new nuclear technologies. The Greens will today also discuss an internal party referendum and their strategy for the regional election.
