Czechs turning slightly to left - poll ... of the Factum Invenio polling agency, said the survey reflected very negative expectations of the public and a critical view of the country's economy. The sceptical attitude is probably the result of a growing dissatisfaction with the political situation in the Czech Republic and fears of the effects of the government's reform plans, according to the survey. The survey was conducted last autumn, while the Chamber of Deputies passed the public finance reform last August.
The reforms that introduced fees in health care and cut some welfare benefits, among others, took effect on January 1. A majority of Czechs (56 percent) were critical of the country's economy even though it has been growing. People consider growing prices (42 percent) and health care (38 percent) the biggest problems. Most Czechs (52 percent) assess the area of employment negatively, but only 13 consider unemployment the biggest problem, while the EU average is twice as high. Czechs mostly assess the situation of the environment as good. Only one in five Czechs trusts the government and one in six trusts the Chamber of Deputies. On the average, one-third of EU citizens trust their governments and parliaments. Some 45 percent of Czechs said they believe the country's EU membership was good and nearly two-thirds of them consider the membership mainly beneficial and advantageous.
