30.01.2008 - Czech presidential candidate favours proper TV duel with Klaus

Svejnar told journalists that it was a pity because the Czech citizens would have been able to watch a real exchange of opinions during such a debate. He said that CT sent Czech presidential candidate Svejnar wants to stimulate dialogue ...

him a letter informing him that they cancelled the debate due to Klaus's refusal to take part in it. Although on Tuesday Svejnar attended a debate with Klaus in the senators' club of the senior opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) that was broadcast live by CT experts believe that it was not a televised debate of two presidential candidates in the proper sense of the word. They pointed to the tense atmosphere of the discussion and to the fact that it probably failed to much influence the opinion of the lawmakers who will elect the new Czech president in February. Svejnar said today he would also agree on the duel on a private television channel. "It would be desirable for citizens to watch a genuine exchange of views," he said. Economist Svejnar, who lives alternately in the United States where he teaches at university and in the Czech Republic, was proposed as a presidential candidate by the junior ruling Greens and nominated by four senators' groups, including the opposition CSSD. He will run against Klaus, nominated by the ODS of which he is honorary chairman. The presidential elections will start at a joint session of the two houses of the Czech parliament on February 8.
