01.02.2008 - Severa replaces Sojdrova as Czech KDU-CSL deputies' group head

Severa, who in the past openly criticised KDU-CSL chairman Jiri Cunek, has replaced Michaela Sojdrova, whose one-year mandate expired, at the group's helm. Severa contested the post a year ago already but he was narrowly defeated by Sojdrova.

He defeated Sojdrova just as narrowly today. He was supported by 7 of the group's 13 members. Severa, 42, is deputy chairman of the lower house security committee. He has been a deputy since 1992. government over his inappropriate utterances on Romanies. Severa did not succeed with his appeal at the time. Later he announced he was resigning as the KDU-CSL deputies' group deputy chairman. "We are unable to reach consensus on many issues but we talk to each other," Severa said today, commenting on his relations with Cunek. As the deputies' group head, Severa has become a member of the party presidium. "I don't think this will raise any tension in the presidium, as I and the chairman are capable of telling things frankly to each other," Severa said. He said he still has reservations about Cunek's utterances on Romanies. Severa said his election does not mean that Sojdrova performed badly as the group's chairwoman. He said his arrival at the group helm implies no fundamental changes. "On the contrary, I think it could calm down the situation in the KDU-CSL," he said. In the past months, the media highlighted Severa in connection with the leak of the "Kubice report," a secret document on organised crime's infiltration of the civil service that the then elite detective Jan Kubice presented to the lower house security committee ahead of the mid-2006 elections. The state attorney, however, has come to the conclusion that Severa committed no crime in this connection.
