Unconfirmed reports say Palestinian gunmen and Egyptian forces have exchanged fire at the Rafah crossing.
The violence comes a day after Cairo closed the frontier, breached by Palestinian militants last month.
The clashes that occurred ahead of the gunfire saw youths throw stones at an Egyptian command post in the area. Egyptian forces responded with tear gas.
Islamist Hamas militants blasted open the border on 23 January, to allow Palestinians to obtain supplies and defy an Israeli blockade of the coastal territory.
The blockade came after an increase in militant rocket attacks against Israeli territory.
