Possible presidential candidate unknown to half of Czechs ... will definitively say whether it will push for the election in the two houses of parliament to be secret or open. So far the KSCM has inclined to supporting an open vote, in accordance with the senior opposition Social Democrats' (CSSD) demand. The participants in the meeting today afterwards indicated that the Communists and Klaus had agreed on certain issues but differed on others. "I'm looking forward to the election on Friday.
Of course, I can't but remark that no votes have been promised to me today," Klaus told reporters. Klaus's candidacy has been proposed by the senior ruling Civic Democratic Party (ODS) which he used to head and of which he is honorary chairman now. KSCM deputies' group head Pavel Kovacik said that Klaus's rival candidate, liberal economist Jan Svejnar, will visit the KSCM group either later today or on Wednesday. This would be the second visit to the group by Svejnar, who has been promoted by the CSSD and the junior ruling Greens (SZ). Some believe the KSCM might tip the scales in the presidential elections. Most recently, KSCM leaders did not rule out that the party might prevent the election of both Klaus and Svejnar and come up with another candidate of its own.
