In the 1970s Dejmal was twice imprisoned for undermining the Czechoslovak communist state and for his "inappropriate" political stands. He spent four years in prison. In 1977 he signed the Charter 77 pro-democracy document and joined the Charter 77 movement, leading its environmentalist section. In his flat he hosted "university" courses for those whose education the communist regime barred for political reasons. Dejmal himself could complete his studies at the Agricultural University only after the 1989 fall of the communist regime. While minister, Dejmal pushed through a programme of the renewal of the countryside and he assisted in its implementation. Along with Josef Vavrousek he established the Society for Permanently Sustainable Life. Last December, Dejmal was elected deputy head of the Institute for the Studies of Totalitarian Regimes.
