Chamber of Deputies chairman Miloslav Vlcek told journalists Czech president probably not chosen in election ...
Czech govt to assess new health care fees in six months ... that he would propose election by secret ballot like a week ago when no president for the next five-year term was chosen. The only change against last week is that Jiri Cunek, chairman of the junior ruling Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), will make a proposal right at the start of the session that could accelerate the negotiations about the procedure. He will propose that unless the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate reach agreement on the method separately, all 281 MPs will jointly vote on it. "This is a step that is to prevent a stalemate and a situation where one house outvotes the other," Vlcek said. This procedure, however, would have to be approved by both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
The above proposal was made last week already, but the Chamber of Deputies rejected a joint vote. The deputies eventually voted by a show of hands. If the votes of senators and deputies were added up, the senior ruling ODS and the Christian Democrats could push through secret ballot. Three candidates have been fielded in the presidential election: incumbent President Vaclav Klaus, nominated by the ODS of which he is honorary chairman, economist Jan Svejnar, nominated by four senator groups, and MEP Jana Bobosikova, nominated by the Communists (KSCM).
