Pierre Williams, 33, denies murdering Beverley Samuels, 36, her daughter Kesha Wizzart, 18, and son Fred Wizzart, 13, in July last year.

Their bodies were found at their home in Thelwall Avenue, Fallowfield, where they had been bludgeoned with a hammer.

One of Williams' friends said he seemed "happy" on the night of the killings.

Claire Doyle told the jury he had told her he was staying "at a woman's house".

Ms Doyle had been out drinking with Mr Williams and a friend, Donna Cole, at The New Union pub in Manchester on 11 July.

It is alleged that the family were murdered between 0330 and 0730 BST the following morning.

At 0900 BST on 11 July Mr Williams withdrew Ј100 from a branch of the Bradford and Bingley. He was the first customer.

Cashier Samantha Heywood told the court: "He was pleasant, quite chatty, quite a nice customer.

"I even mentioned to a colleague after I served him, how nice he had come across."

'Laughing and bubbly'

The court heard from Mrs Samuels' colleague Susan Sandham, a ward sister at the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

She said: "She was always laughing, bubbly, she would do anything for anyone."

She said she believed Mr Williams - who had turned up unexpectedly at Thelwall Avenue two days before the killings - had a key to the property.

Ms Sandham said he would phone Mrs Samuels "in the middle of the night" and that she began to ignore his calls.

The jury heard last week that Mr Williams, from Selly Oak, Birmingham, raped and violated Beverley Samuels, a nurse, before killing her with at least seven blows to her head.

Ms Wizzart had her hands tied behind her back with a black bra before she was killed in the same way.

She was found face down, naked and had been sexually assaulted.

The body of Fred Wizzart was found nearby.

The trial continues.
