"I think it should be our primary aim to be a party elected by the people who are Christians in this country," Macek told the delegates.
Macek said the KDU-CSL had Christianity in its name, but the party did not address the Christians who should be the closest to it as it should ensue from their conviction.
"Christianity that it is in our name is no burden, but a great chance," Macek said.
The Christian Democrats should embark on the path of "kind self-confidence." They should be neither ashamed of Christianity in their name nor adopt any fundamentalist approach when pressing for these values, Macek said.
Cyril Svoboda, chairman of the government legislative council, said the party was called the Christian and Democratic Union-Czechoslovak People's Party, but it was not in union with anyone and it had nothing in common with Slovakia.
"This should prompt us to think of it," Svoboda told CTK, adding that his comment did not necessarily mean that the name should be changed.
"But I think this, too, can be a theme for discussion," he added.
The Christian and Democratic Union-Czechoslovak People's Party is the historical party name, adopted after the 1918 establishment of Czechoslovakia.
