26.03.2008 - Czech govt agrees with science, research financing reform
Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) said he would like to reduce the number of institutions redistributing money even more radically and that the goal is to reduce the number to a mere five.
The government reform will be included in the White Book of Tertiary Education that the Ministry of Education is now preparing.
The reform aims to improve the quality of the methodology of evaluation of scientific work results.

Czech PM wants current govt to introduce tuition fees - press ... decision on finance for science should in the future be only made by the newly established Technological Agency, Academy of Sciences, Grant Agency, Education Ministry and one more institution.
At present, particular ministries redistribute money within their sectors.
The government hopes that the reform will simplify support to scientific work, to its higher effectiveness and use for innovations, a greater connection with the private sphere and a more intensive involvement of Czech scientists and technicians in international cooperation.
The government says the current fragmented system that is unable to provide means effectively and in time and to use means from the European Union is failing, which results in many branches lagging behind the world.
According to the government document, the reform could be completed in 2012.
