Thanks to the database, the police have uncovered about 500 foreigners who had a residence permit or sought it, although they were persona non gratae in some of the EU countries, she added. Through the SIS, other EU countries have found 35 cars upon a Czech request, Kopecka said. The Czech police have found almost 80 cars stolen abroad. Michael Weiss from the National Centre SIRENE said the number would rise due to the duty to check whether newly registered cars were sought within the system. Kopecka said the database had contributed to the solution to some well-known cases. "For one, I'd like to mention the successful search for and return of Barbora Skrlova to the Czech Republic and the arrest of four Danish robbers in Prague three weeks ago," she added. "Without the SIS, law would not have been enforced in these cases," she added. Skrlova, a 33-year-old Czech woman, misled the authorities by passing herself off as an underage girl last summer.

The Czech Republic joined the Schengen area on December 21, 2007, along with Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Its checks, formerly conducted on the border, have been moved inland. People from members of the Schengen zone do not have to undergo any internal border checks.
