Havel and European Commission President Jose Barroso will officially announce the establishment of the foundation on April 15. According to CTK information, renowned personalities who have contributed to the transfer to democracy in countries of central and eastern Europe will sit on the EFDP board. The board will include, among others, director of the Czech People in Need society Simon Panek or co-founder of the Public against Violence umbrella post-communist democratic movement Martin Butora. The EFDP will serve as the umbrella organisation for a network of non-governmental organisations promoting democracy and will cooperate with European institutions. The EFDP will finance projects in support of democracy in such countries as Cuba, Myanmar, Belarus and Zimbabwe. The EFDP also wants to help non-European organisations engaged in the democratic process in their countries or regions gain access to the EU's information and financial sources. The EFPD will become a certain European "storage of knowledge" in the areas of strengthening of democracy. Non-governmental organisations from the Netherlands, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Finland have joined it.
