Former US President Jimmy Carter has met a leading Hamas figure in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Naser al Shaer, who was deputy prime minister in the Hamas-led government that the US and other Western nations boycotted, described the meeting as very good. Carter also plans to meet with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, who is in exile in Syria. Israel has been angered by Carter's willingness to meet with officials with Hamas, which does not recognise the right of the Jewish state to exist.
