German Agriculture Minister Horst Seehofer has called for a drastic rise in European agricultural production to counter rising world food prices and shortages.

Food riots have been reported in Haiti, Egypt and the Philippines amid reports of a sharp rise in prices for key foodstuffs, such as cereals, dairy produce and meat, and of a rise in demand for bio-fuels.
