The German Foreign Ministry says that US authorities in Afghanistan have held a German terror suspect in custody since early January. The German of Afghan origin was detained over accusations of being on a US base without authorisation.
A ministry spokesman said that Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was in contact with the US on the issue and was working to secure the suspect's release. The German weekly magazine Der Spiegel quoted German security authorities as saying that the 41-year-old man did not pose a terror threat.
