US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has made an unannounced visit to Baghdad saying that political leaders of Iraq's Shi'ites, Sunnis and Kurds are closer than ever before to improving security. Her visit follows a threat of "open war" made by the Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr against Iraq's US-backed government.

US troops killed in northern Iraq ... the Accordance Front, is close to rejoining the government which is currently dominated by Shi'ites and Kurds. During Rice's visit, the US military said 20 militia fighters had been killed in Baghdad's Sadr City slum during clashes with US forces on Saturday night.
