Some earlier legs of the Olympic torch relay had been disrupted by demonstrators protesting against Chinese rule in Tibet. Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has appealed for calm in the public debate ahead of the summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Steinmeier told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that the International Olympic Committee awarded the Games to Beijing in the hope that the media attention would encourage China to open up to the rest of the world.
