However, Hasek indicated that the third already attempt by the opposition to oust the government of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS) was close.

of Deputies session," Hasek said. On Tuesday, a Chamber of Deputies' regular session will begin, but the CSSD might initiate an extraordinary session to take a no-confidence vote. For this it requires the signatures of 50 deputies. The CSSD has 71 seats in the 200-member Chamber of Deputies, more than enough to have an extraordinary session convoked. However, it would need the support of 101 deputies to oust the cabinet, but the CSSD and the junior opposition Communists (KSCM) only have 97 votes together. CSSD chairman Jiri Paroubek admitted recently the CSSD might not be able to have its proposal for the no-confidence approved. He said, however, that by proposing a no-confidence vote the Social Democrats would like to make it clear that they had distanced themselves from Topolanek's government policy. The Social Democrats criticise the current centre-right coalition government of the ODS, the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Greens (SZ) for alleged corruption, for its health care reform and for its consent to have U.S. missile defence radar base stationed on Czech soil. The Social Democrats are also opposed to the proposed law on state-church property settlement and to the recent return of KDU-CSL chairman Jiri Cunek who was suspected of corruption to the cabinet.
