Sarkozy, whose country takes over the European Union's rotating presidency in July, said he was shocked by what happened in riots in Tibet last month and had said so to China's president.
France has called on China to enter dialogue with the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing accuses of masterminding the riots in Tibet's regional capital Lhasa last month. The Dalai Lama has denied the charge.
