Japan accuses Russia of incursion ... The Chinese news agency Xinhua says China will hold talks with envoys of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader.
The gesture by the host of the Olympic Games this August follows international pressure on China over its handling of protests last month in Tibet. An envoy for the Dalai Lama told Deutsche Welle that China had not yet made known a date nor a location for the talks. Beijing had previously rejected direct contacts with the leadership of exiled Tibetans. China's change of mind has been widely wecomed. Germany's foreign ministry says the intended talks will contribute to resolving conflict in Tibet. French President Nicolas Sarkosy says it's a major step toward dialogue. The US embassy in Beijing has described it as a "very positive development." EU commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, who's visiting Beijing, says he's "very happy" about China's changed stance. The Olympic torch has reached Nagano in Japan. In London, Paris and San Francisco the relay was disrupted by anti-China protestors.
