Central American governments have begun a meeting in Nicaragua to address a regional food crisis.
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega opened the meeting by warning that food shortages could lead to further social unrest in Latin America, and blamed the problem on market forces as well as the policies of developed nations. Farm ministers from Central America, as well as Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, are looking at ways to boost output of maize, rice, beans and cattle feed grains. At least six people were killed earlier this month in Haiti during riots over soaring food prices.
