The local council and London Mayor elections are the Labour Party's first real test since Brown took over. In the months since Tony Blair stepped down last June, Labour has seen support plummet to its lowest since Margaret Thatcher's heyday in the late 1980s. Brown says the government has faced a hard time due to the global credit crunch, which has hit the housing market and economic growth; as well as rising food and fuel prices.
