On Friday US forces killed at least eight Shiite militiamen in a series of firefights in Baghdad's Sadr City. The US military says sporadic fighting began on Friday morning and saw US airstrikes and tank-fire, in anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army stronghold. US forces have been clashing with Shiite militiamen since March 25 in the impoverished Shiite area of the capital. Hundreds of people have been killed since then, many of them civilians.
