Supporters of leftist President Evo Morales have disrupted polling in a referendum in Bolivia's Santa Cruz province, burning ballot boxes at two constituencies.
The referendum was called to vote on whether to adopt a new statute that would give the wealthy region greater autonomy from the central government. President Morales described the referendum as illegal while the military warned that it violated the country's territorial integrity. According to opinion polls 70 percent of the local population favour wider autonomy.
