Israel is not trying to expand or build new Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.
This is according to Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. Livni's statement followed comments by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who had earlier described the continued construction of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank as "particularly problematic". Livni also said Israel had stopped confiscating land from Palestinians in order to build new settlements. Rice was in the region to call on Israel to do more to ease restrictions on Palestinian movement and to urge the Palestinians to take further action to curb attacks by militants on Israel.
