Witnesses said soldiers fired into a crowd as thousands of demonstrators burned tyres and threw rocks through car windows. Some also attacked shops that had refused to accept old currency notes when people tried to buy food. This forced hundreds of shops to close.   Reporters say shopkeepers have been asking for US dollars, due to the high number of counterfeit shilling notes in circulation. This has led to spiralling inflation.
