The junta has also urgently appealed for foreign aid to help hundreds of thousands of people who have been left without shelter and drinking water. Relief efforts from United Nations aid agencies and the International Red Cross are progressing slowly due to widespread damage and strict government restrictions on the movements of foreign aid workers.
