EU says Serbia deal on hold ... zone of the European Union have said they will issue free visas to all valid applicants from Serbia.
The joint statement issued in Berlin by the German Foreign Ministry, said the European Commission had suggested up to 80 percent of applicants should obtain the travel visas at no charge. The move comes ahead of a crucial election in Serbia on May 11, which will determine whether Serbia pursues closer ties with the EU, as advocated by President Tadic, or embraces the nationalist policies of Serbia's hard-line Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica. Tensions between the EU and Serbia have been high since the EU's support of Kosovo's independence. Serbia considers recognition of the breakaway province a violation of international law.
