Israel has begun marking the 60th anniversary of its foundation in 1948.
Celebrations began with a flag-raising ceremony at Jerusalem's Mount Herzl. Fireworks and outdoor celebrations are to follow throughout the country. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend outdoor performances by local artists throughout the evening across Israel. Security has been tightened amid warnings that Arab militants might try to launch a major attack. Israel declared statehood on May 14, 1948, a day before the expiry of Britain's United Nations-mandate over historic Palestine.
