The Sudanese government says the army has repelled an attack on the capital, Khartoum by rebels from the western region of Darfur.
The Justice and Equality Movement rebels claim to have taken control of a western suburb of Khartoum, in their stated effort to topple the government. This would be the closest that the rebels have come to taking Khartoum. The authorities have imposed a curfew in the capital.
