Sudan's government said it had beaten back the assault by the Justice and Equality Movement rebels, allegedly backed by Ndjamena. The insurgents reached Khartoum's outskirts, where they briefly held some suburbs, with the declared intent of toppling the regime. A curfew on the city has been extended indefinitely to capture remaining rebels. Khartoum and Ndjamena accuse each other of backing rebels seeking to topple their respective regimes. In February, rebels allegedly backed by Khartoum advanced as far as the gates of the presidential palace in Ndjamena before being repulsed.
