11.05.2008 - Aid trickles into cyclone-struck Burma

International aid groups say more supplies are trickling into Burma, but that it is still not nearly enough to meet the needs of more than a million people affected by last weekend's cyclone.

The British-based development charity Oxfam has warned of a possible outbreak of water-borne diseases. An Oxfam official told reporters in Bangkok that hundreds of thousands could be killed unless the survivors got quick access to food, potable water, and sanitation. The European Union has welcomed signs that Burma's military regime is improving access for relief organisations, but it has also called on the junta to do more. European Development Commissioner Louis Michel told reporters in Brussels that the EU was ready to provide more aid, but that it wouldn't be much use without professional delivery on the ground. The junta now says 28,000 people died in the cyclone. International agencies fear the actual death toll could be more than 100,000.
