Sudan's opposition leader Hassan al-Turabi and at least four top leaders of his party have been arrested after Darfur rebels attacked the outskirts of Khartoum.
At least 65 people were killed in the weekend rebel offensive, which was mounted by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). On Sunday, Sudan cut diplomatic relations with neighbouring Chad, saying the attack by the rebels from the western Darfur region had been supported by Chadian President Idriss Deby. In a television broadcast, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir accused JEM leader Khalil Ibrahim, who is from the same tribe as Deby, of being behind the attack. Chad has denied any involvement.
