Chinese state media is reporting that nearly 10,000 people have been killed by the country's worst earthquake in over three decades.
The epicentre of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake was in the country's south-western province of Sichuan. The quake struck during the middle of the school day on Monday, and many children were buried under rubble when at least eight schools collapsed. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has said the situation in southwest China is worse than originally believed. A number of countries, including Germany, France and Japan, have offered relief assistance.
