He said he would remain on hunger strike indefinitely at a publicly accessible place in Belehradska street in Prague. The course of his protest will be documented on No to Bases' website, Pravo writes. According to the group, Tamas's hunger strike is to be joined by another opponent of the radar, Jan Bednar. The two expect other people to join the protest in more than ten European cities, Pravo says. The Czech government and Washington have negotiated on the radar, which the USA wants to be part of its missile defence shield, for more than a year now. Last week Czech Deputy Prime Minister Alexandr Vondra said he expects the two treaties concerning the project to be signed in June or mid-July at the latest.
To take effect, they must be approved by Czech parliament. Public opinion polls show that a majority of Czechs are against the radar, as is the left-wing opposition and even certain deputies for the centre-right governing coalition. The government has 100 deputies in the 200-seat lower house.
