German Chancellor Angela Merkel has embarked on an eight-day state visit to Latin America.
The first stage of her trip is Brazil, where she will meet President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday. Merkel's tour will be highlighted by a European Union-Latin American summit in Peru's capital later in the week. More than 60 state representatives will be meeting in Lima to discuss economic ties, climate change and ways and means of combating poverty in Latin America.
