The European Union has urged Burma's military junta to allow aid to an estimated 1.5 million people facing hunger and disease in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.
A statement agreed by EU development ministers at an emergency meeting in Brussels however stopped short of calling for the world to deliver aid without the junta's approval. Germany's airports hit by strike ... necessary. Meanwhile, the UN called for an emergency air or sea operation to channel relief to the cyclone victims. Burmese state television has revised upwards the death toll to 34,000, but international relief agencies believe at least 100,000 may have died.
