German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Peru, the second stop on her Latin America tour.
She is to meet with President Alan Garcia before taking part in a summit on Friday between European Union and Latin American countries. The gathering is expected to discuss poverty and climate change. The talks have been overshadowed by a row between Chancellor Merkel and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Merkel has called on countries in the region to distance themselves from Venezuela's socialist government, while Chavez has accused the German leader of belonging to the same political tradition as the Nazis. Merkel is expected to meet Chavez, among other leaders, on the sidelines of the conference.
