16.05.2008 - Burmese cyclone dead 78,000

In a rare admission on the cyclone disaster in Burma, its reclusive military leaders have raised the number of confirmed dead to 78,000.

State television said a further 56,000 people are missing. While allowing a trickle of relief supplies the regime has again rejected international calls to let outside experts direct relief efforts needed for 2.5 million destitute survivors facing fresh rainfalls. The head of the German parliament's foreign affairs committee Ruprecht Polenz has urged Burma's regime to react responsibly. On Friday EU aid commissioner Lois Michel left Rangoon empty-handed after failing to persuade the regime to accept large-scale foreign help. Aid agencies with local staff in Burma say cholera has emerged in the devastated Irrawaddy Delta.
