16.05.2008 - Biosafety rules drafted, not finalized

Experts on biosafety have ended a United Nations conference in Bonn, Germany, without finalizing international rules on who is liable if farming experiments with genetically modified organisms go wrong.

But 2,000 delegates from some 150 countries did agree on a draft convention that would allow legally binding claims for compensation against manufacturers or direct perpetrators. Details are to be negotiated until 2010, two years beyond an original deadline. Host German secretary of state for agriculture Ursula Heinen said the world's leading gene technology companies had dropped their demand for a voluntary agreement.
