05.06.2008 - Czech opposition calls on Supreme Attorney to resign

They reacted to today's court verdict, saying that CSSD shadow justice minister Marie Benesova need not apologise to Vesecka and another five judiciary representatives except for one for her statements about "judiciary mafia" in the alleged corruption case of deputy PM Jiri Cunek. Justice Minister Jiri Pospisil (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS) should also take personal responsibility in the case, the CSSD said. The junior opposition Communists (KSCM) even call on Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (ODS) and the whole government to resign. CSSD deputy chairman Milan Urban said the verdict in the dispute between Benesova and state attorneys confirmed that the latter Czech attorney dismisses testimony on pressure in favour of Cunek ...

interfered in Cunek's case using mafia-like practice. Consequently, the government should consider dismissing Vesecka and Pospisil should also bear the consequences, Urban told reporters. Ivan Langer, another ODS deputy head and Interior Minister, said he did not know the court's verdict in detail and this is why he cannot assess it. However, the CSSD's calls for resignation cannot be taken seriously, Langer added. Cunek, chairman of the junior ruling Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), resigned from the posts of deputy PM and local development minister last November when his case of suspected bribery was reopened. It was, however, definitively halted a fortnight later and Cunek returned to the centre-right government in April. Speculations emerged in the press about some judiciary representatives exerting pressure on the attorneys in Cunek's case. Vesecka then ordered the continuation of the prosecution of Cunek. After new questioning, the attorney in charge concluded that no crime had been committed in the case and he halted the prosecution again.
