06.06.2008 - Bundestag adopts climate law

The German parliament has passed a climate protection law aimed at slashing a third off Germany's carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2030.

renewables make up 14 percent alongside coal and nuclear power. The Bundestag also decided to double co-generation, using excess heat from power stations, and better insulation of new houses. Meanwhile, non-governmental delegates to an international climate change conference in Bonn say progress is being made, but too slowly. The talks continue next week, aimed a formulating a treaty to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. In Washington, Senate Republicans have blocked a climate-saving bill, postponing debate until next year for a new US Congress and president.
